The expedition was about to go home almost empty-handed when Gustavo Melo, a boatman from the Tucano community, took the team at night to a lake with five plants, one in flower. The team proposes listing it as critically endangered.
Driven by eight Latin American and three African countries, the proposal passed with 83 votes in favour, 12 against and 27 abstentions. A committee will now draft the text, and Indigenous peoples want a seat at the table.
