Editorial policy
Our commitment
Altavia exists to explain mountains and nature accurately. We would rather publish a little later than publish something we cannot verify.
Types of content
Every article states its type, so you know what you are reading:
- News: recent facts, with a date and sources.
- Analysis: interpretation of facts with context and data.
- Explainer: in-depth coverage of a topic so you can understand it.
- Guide: practical advice based on official recommendations and good practice.
- Route: a descriptive fact sheet with indicative data that must be checked.
- Curiosity / Species: science writing.
- Buying guide / Comparison: criteria for choosing gear. We do not present as our own tests anything we have not tested.
- Opinion: signed and clearly labelled.
Sources and fact-checking
- We prioritise primary sources: scientific bodies, weather services, parks, federations, peer-reviewed reports and official statements.
- We link to the sources at the end of each article.
- We do not copy articles from other outlets: we create original content from legitimate information and credit whoever published first.
- On safety topics (routes, weather, rescues, first aid) we always refer to official information and flag indicative data.
Corrections
If we spot an error or you point one out, we correct it as soon as possible and update the “Updated” date. Substantial corrections are noted in the article itself. You can tell us via the contact form.
Independence
Advertising and affiliate partnerships never determine what we cover or how. Sponsored content is labelled as such. Affiliate links are marked with rel="sponsored" and accompanied by the corresponding notice.
Authorship
Articles are signed with the name of the author or the desk responsible. Desk bylines group together the newsroom’s work.
Use of tools and technology
The newsroom may use digital tools (including artificial intelligence tools) for research, organisation or review tasks. All published content is reviewed and owned by the newsroom, which is responsible for its accuracy. English versions of our articles are translations of the Spanish originals reviewed by the newsroom.
Images
We use our own images, images from licensed libraries or from open repositories (such as Wikimedia Commons) with authorship and licence indicated. When we do not have a suitable photograph we use our own illustrations, identified as such.
Sensitive locations
We do not publish precise locations of nests, dens, vulnerable populations of threatened plants or animals, or places whose disclosure could cause harm.
